SOCIAL SECURITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE PRESS NOTICE
Social Security Advisory Committee Publishes its Nineteenth Report
The Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) has published its Report for the period from August 2005 to July 2006. The report will be presented to the Committee’s first ‘Stakeholder Seminar’, to be held in London on 2 November 2006.
The Report features a summary of the year’s work, including scrutiny of proposals for legislation and the Department’s public information products, the Committee’s responses to the Welfare Reform Green Paper and the Pensions White Paper, and an account of members’ visits to operational sites.
Introducing the report, the Committee’s Chairman, Sir Richard Tilt, said: “ I hope that this report provides a balanced and comprehensive over-view of the work we have carried out, and the advice we have offered the Secretary of State. We are looking forward to our first Stakeholder Seminar and sharing our thoughts and views with a range of experts from the field of social welfare”.
Notes for editors:
The SSAC is the main advisory body for the United Kingdom on social security
matters, except those relating to industrial injuries, war pensions, and
occupational pensions. There is informal consultation with the Inland Revenue
for tax credits, national insurance and Child Benefit.
Most proposals for social security regulations have to be submitted to the SSAC before they are made. When the Committee reports on proposals for regulations the report must be laid before Parliament together with the regulations and a statement from the Secretary of State responding to any recommendations.
The Committee's Chairman is Sir Richard Tilt. The other current members are Kwame Akuffo, Les Allamby, Simon Bartley, Brigid Campbell, Dr Angus Erskine, Richard Exell OBE, Alison Garnham, Professor Elaine Kempson, Laurie Naumann, Professor Anthony Ogus CBE, Patricia Smail, Professor Janet Walker, Professor Robert Walker.
The report (priced £9.50) is published by and is available from Corporate Document Services, 7 Eastgate, Leeds, LS2 7LY. Tel 0113 399 4040, fax: 0113 399 4205, email, orderline@cds.co.uk
