CONSULTATION: THE SOCIAL SECURITY (CLAIMS AND PAYMENTS) (AMENDMENT) (No. xx) REGULATIONS 2006 – “THE AFFORDABLE CREDIT DEDUCTIONS SCHEME”
The Social Security Advisory Committee (SSAC) has been asked by the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions to consider proposals for The Social Security (Claims and Payments) (Amendment) (No. xx) Regulations 2006. The proposals would allow deductions from social security benefits where there has been failure to repay loans to “not for profit” lenders.
Before the Committee reports on these proposals, it would like to hear from organisations and individuals who have views about them. Similar proposals will be brought forward for Northern Ireland and representations from interested parties about the position in Northern Ireland are also invited.
Those wishing to make representations to the Committee may obtain a copy of the Department’s explanatory memorandum, and a copy of the draft regulations from the Assistant Secretary, Bob Elbert (enquiries: 020 7412 1507; ssac@dwp.gsi.gov.uk) to the Committee or from the SSAC website: www.ssac.org.uk. Representations should be sent to the Committee by email to ssac@dwp.gsi.gov.uk, or via the consultation response facility on the website, or to room 344, New Court, 48 Carey Street, London WC2A 2LS to arrive no later than Friday 15th September 2006.
Notes for editors:
The SSAC is the main UK advisory body for all social security matters except those relating to industrial injuries, war pensions, occupational pensions, and National Insurance contributions. Most proposals for social security regulations have to be submitted to the SSAC before they are made. When the Committee reports on regulations, the report is laid before Parliament with the regulations and a statement from the Secretary of State responding to any recommendations the Committee has made. [The SSAC is also consulting concurrently on proposals for The Social Security, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit (Miscellaneous Amendments) (No. xx) Regulations 2006. A separate press release covers that consultation.]
