SOCIAL SECURITY ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SSAC)
WELCOMES PUBLICATION OF ITS REPORT ON THE DRAFT SOCIAL SECURITY
(INCAPACITY FOR WORK) (GENERAL) AMENDMENT REGULATION 2003
On Monday 14 March the Department for Work and Pensions published the Social Security Advisory Committee's May 2003 report on these proposed regulations, along with a statement from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary, Maria Eagle, indicating that the Government has decided to withdraw the proposals for the time being, and gather additional information before determining whether or not further proposals are warranted.
Welcoming the publication - published as Cm 6491 - the Committee noted that its principle recommendation had been accepted, and expressed its satisfaction with the outcome.
Notes for editors:
The SSAC is the advisory body for the United Kingdom on social security matters, except those relating to industrial injuries, war pensions, and occupational pensions. There is informal consultation with the Inland Revenue for tax credits, national insurance and Child Benefit. Most proposals for social security regulations have to be submitted to the SSAC before they are made. When the Committee reports on proposals for regulations the report must be laid before Parliament together with the regulations and a statement from the Secretary of State responding to any recommendations.
The Committee's Chairman is Sir Richard Tilt (at the time of the report referred to above it was Thomas Boyd-Carpenter KBE). The other current members are Kwame Akuffo, Les Allamby, Simon Bartley, Brigid Campbell, Elisabeth Elias, Dr Angus Erskine, Richard Exell OBE, Alison Garnham, Professor Elaine Kempson, Laurie Naumann, Professor Anthony Ogus CBE, Professor Janet Walker, Professor Robert Walker.
The Report will also shortly be available via a link on the Committee's website: www.ssac.org.uk, where further details of the Committee's remit, activities and membership can also be found.
